On March 18, 46 participants from California and Oregon attended a small grain and alfalfa workshop held in Tulelake. The event was co-sponsored by the Intermountain Research and Extension Center (IREC) and by the Siskiyou County University of California Cooperative Extension office.

IREC director and Farm Advisor Rob Wilson welcomed participants and spoke on alfalfa weed control strategies.

Ron Quigley, Deputy Director of Emergency Services, Siskiyou County, updated the audience regarding the current drought situation, and asked that farmers and ranchers complete a survey of their losses due to lack of water.

Steve Orloff, UC Farm Advisor, Siskiyou County, gave four separate talks: one on grain seeding rate and nitrogen management, forage production with limited water, making sound alfalfa fertilizer decisions, and alfalfa cutting frequency and fall harvest management.

Presentations are available for downloading at the IREC website.
