Narrowleaf Milkweeds are super for butterflies!

Sep 9, 2011

Some plant species are better than others for providing nectar to the insect world.  Narrowleaf Milkweed (Asclepias fascicularis) is considered "super" for butterflies, with at least ten different species visiting the plants for their nectar treat.  Here you see a Western Tiger Swallowtail (Papillo rutulus) sipping nectar from the milkweed flowers.

Other butterfly species known to visit narrowleaf milkweed include American Painted lady, Acmon Blue, Gray Hairstreak, Morning Cloak, Queen, Monarch, Least Checkered Skipper, and numerous nocturnal moths.
