Neighboring sheep visit the dog trials.

Nov 15, 2011

As each set of four ewes finishes a dog handler's run, they are "exhausted" out of the trial area and are not to be used again for the trials.   These "exhausted " (already run) ewes were from Saturday's trials, and were turned out into the neighboring "South Pasture" on that evening.

Occasionally on Sunday they would graze to within sight of the trial area and would have to be "pushed" out-of-sight, using a border collie herd dog,  so as to not interfere with the Sunday's trial sheep.   If left within sight, then the sets of four trial run ewes might see them and exhibit a strong desire to make a break for the other flock instead of staying on course.  For the trial event there is a concerted effort to keep the circumstances of each dog handler's run equal and fair for the competition.
