Sticky monkeys abundant at Hopland

May 2, 2012

No, UC Hopland does not have monkeys sticking to the trees, but the Center does have an abundance of Sticky Monkey Flower (Mimulus aurantiacus), or sometimes called Bush Monkey Flower, scattered throughout the chaparral and oak woodland habitats.  It can often be found in rocky slopes or outcrops, or in shallow, poor, rocky soil types.

The woody stems of this species are covered with sticky secretions ... and hence it's name.  Belonging to the Orobanchaceae, or Broom-rape family, the orange flowers are rich in nectar and are a great attractant to hummingbirds.  This plant was formerly in the Scophulariaceae (Figwort) family.

The juice of this plant apparently can be used to soothe the pain of minor burns.
