Another Mimulus at Hopland REC

May 3, 2012

...continuing on from yesterday's BLOG post about Sticky Monkey flowers and the genus Mimulus, the UC Hopland Research & Extension Center has seven species in that genus that have been recorded here.   The Common Monkey Flower (Mimulus guttatus), also known as Yellow Monkey Flower or Seep-spring Monkey Flower, is a common component of wet meadow locations.   This plant can sometimes be semi-aquatic with its herbage floating in small bodies of water.

This species of plant apparently has been a model organism for studies of evolution and ecology with as many as 1000 scientific papers focused on this species.  However, none of those studies have been accomplished at HREC, but the potential is here for such botanical research.

The Hopland Research & Extension Center has nearly 700 vascular plants recorded and collected from the 5358 acres of property.
