Blue or White? ...both are right!

Deerbrush (Ceanothus integerrimus) is a rather widespread shrubby plant in the western states of New Mexico, Arizona, California, Oregon, and Washington.  Here in California this conspicuous shrub with white or light blue blossoms is found in all but 11 counties, and is common throughout the North Coast.  There are a total of 99 recorded sites within Mendocino County according to the calflora website.

In coastal areas I have heard the common name of "blue blossom" given to this shrub ... as many times the blossoms are various shades of colors from white to cream to light blue to blue.   Native Americans used this plant to make baskets, and it is an important browse plant for deer.   This plant also attracts a wide variety of insects.

Here at the UC Hopland Research & Extension Center it can be sparsely found in chaparral and mixed hardwood vegetation types.
