Gold wires augment Hopland budget?

May 31, 2012

...only in our dreams!  Actually, Gold Wires, or Goldwires (Hypericum concinnum) is a native perennial herb that is native to California and is endemic to the region as it is only found in 22 of the counties of this state.  It is related to the old-time popular landscaping plant called St. John's Wort.

Found at the 0 - 3000 foot elevation zone in yellow pine, chaparral, and oak woodland vegetation types, it is an occasional late-spring wildflower found at the UC Hopland Research & Extension Center.  Here it mostly occurs in chaparral, but this photo was taken in mixed oak woodland.  I do not know what the insect species is.
